Condensation reaction between 3-acetylcumarine and arylaldehydes in the presence of L-proline

Background: In recent years, L-proline and L-proline derivatives were successfully used as organocatalysts in asymmetric aldol and Michael addition reactions [17] To the best of our knowledge, there was no attempt to use L-proline as a catalyst for the synthesis of 1-(3̒-coumarinyl)-3-aryl-2-propen-1-one. Methods: In a one neck flask, 3-acetylcumarine (1 mmol) and aryl aldehydes (1.2 mmol) and L-proline as a catalyst were mixed in ethanol under reflux condition. After completion of the reaction monitored by TLC, ethanol was evaporated and water was added and the product was appeared as a solid compound. The desired product was obtained after filtration, dried and recrystallized by ethanol and identified by Perkin Elmer FT-IR spectrometer and 1HNMR spectra on Bruker DRX- 300 MHZ NMR instrument. Results: In this study, 3-acetyl cumarine, and aromatic aldehydes in the gained considerable attention in the presence of L-proline under reflux condition in ethanol was subjected for the synthesis of 1-(3-coumarinyl)-3-aryl-2-propen-1-one, in good-to-excellent yields, regarding to fully simple and efficient route, using less hazardous solvent and easy separation (Scheme 1).
