Subgrid-scale model effect on large-eddy simulation of a fully developed turbulent duct flow

Large eddy simulation of turbulent flow in a square duct is performed with the dynamic Smagorinsky subgrid scale model at friction Reynolds number equal 180. To investigate the effect of the SGS model on large-eddy simulation predictions, a simulation without an SGS model is also performed and the results are compared with those of the dynamic Smagorinsky model and a reference direct numerical simulation data. Simulations are carried out using a second order finite volume Navier Stokes solver. Large eddy simulation predictions with the dynamic Smagorinsky model show a reasonable agreement with the DNS data for the mean velocity and Reynolds stresses. An appreciable improvement in large eddy simulation predictions is also observed compared with the no subgrid scale model predictions.
